The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit, organized a workshop on the role of graduates in sustainable development in Iraq. The workshop was conducted by Assist. Prof.Meena Safaa Mohammed and Assist.Prof.Enas Abdul Zaid Kazim, with the attendance of several faculty members and students of the college.

The activity aimed to contribute to a better future by achieving pivotal developmental objectives, including the eradication of poverty and hunger, ensuring food security, promoting sustainable agriculture, as well as fostering prosperity, ensuring access to quality education and healthy living for all, advancing gender equality, providing access to clean water and sanitation, affordable clean energy, and promoting decent work and economic growth.

The event addressed two main themes. The first theme focused on the role of graduates in sustainable development and how to achieve it, emphasizing the preservation and sustainability of environmental resources. It also highlighted the role of both government and society, including the private and public sectors, in sustaining scientific research as a vital resource, as well as understanding the concept, dimensions, and characteristics of sustainable development.

The workshop concluded with a series of recommendations, including the necessity of embracing the concept of a sustainable university as a roadmap for achieving sustainability. This entails a focus on instilling a culture of sustainability in early education stages and activating the role of educational guidance in this regard. Additionally, there was a call for increased state funding for sustainable scientific research and the establishment of sectoral committees to monitor the implementation of objectives related to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
