The Quality Assurance Unit at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad organized a workshop entitled (Safety Manual and Warning and Guidance Signs in Educational Laboratories, in the presence of a number of professors, affiliates, and students of the Institute.
The workshop aimed to introduce the importance of posters placed inside educational laboratories as well as their role in guiding researchers and workers, and to provide examples of potential dangers inside laboratories, including fires, drinking or swallowing toxic substances, continuous exposure to low doses of toxic substances that have harmful effects in the long term, exposure to factors that cause infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and wounds, and presenting the most important reasons that pave the way for injuries, namely lack of knowledge, haste to work, confusion and Negligence and wrong judgment of things.
The workshop recommended general biosafety measures, including that all materials produced by the human body such as blood, other fluids, and tissues should be treated as potential sources of transmission and the use of mechanical pipettes and not oral pipettes when handling all liquids in the laboratory, avoiding procedures that result in droplets such as deactivating bacteria by sound waves and mixing or washing operations in open laboratories, as well as conducting the centrifugation process in closed tubes inside the centrifuge central airtight closure.
