The College of Science for Women at the University of Baghdad hosted a symposium titled “Road Safety,” featuring presentations by Colonel Mohammed Jumaa Mohsen from the Baghdad Traffic Directorate and Major Haider Shakir Mahmmoud, head of the Traffic Media Department. The event was attended by faculty members and staff of the college.

The seminar aimed to shed light on the reasons behind traffic congestion, primarily stemming from the increasing prevalence of individual vehicle usage over public transportation, as well as a lack of cultural awareness among some citizens regarding safe driving practices and the distractions posed by mobile phone usage. Additionally, the seminar addressed the significant economic impact of traffic accidents, with over 3% of the Gross Domestic Product being lost annually, including damages to infrastructure. It also discussed the adverse health and psychological effects resulting from such accidents.

Finally, the seminar covered various types of traffic signs, including warning signs, regulatory signs, directional signs, and road markings, emphasizing the importance for citizens to be familiar with these signs to ensure public safety.
