The University of Baghdad has achieved a milestone for Iraq by emerging recently as the first Iraqi university to be featured in the QS Sustainability Ranking. It has demonstrated outstanding results in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, which measures the extent to which global universities are achieving sustainable development goals. It advanced to the (921-94) global ranking, marking the first appearance of any Iraqi university in the ranking over the past two years. It secured the top position nationally and ranked (267) at the Asian continent level.

This ranking encompasses three main areas: environmental impact, social impact, and governance. Each area includes specific performance indicators. In the environmental impact criterion, the university achieved the (875) global ranking, with particular emphasis on the environmental sustainability indicator, where it secured the (737) position globally. In the environmental education indicator, the university attained the (326) global ranking, and the social impact domain, consisting of five indicators, the university excelled in the knowledge exchange indicator, achieving the (712) global ranking. As for the third and final area related to governance, the university secured the (469) global ranking.

It is worth noting that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015, represent the culmination of decades of work to address the world’s most urgent issues. This ranking aims to support those efforts, believing in the significant role that universities can play in leading comprehensive implementation across various sectors related to sustainable development goals.
