The Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, inaugurated its first festival for World Geographic Information Systems Day, coinciding with the World Entrepreneurship Week. The event was sponsored by the Rector of the University of Baghdad, Prof.Dr. Munir Al-Saadi, under the supervision of the College’s Dean, Assist. Prof.Dr. Raed Falih Hassan. The ceremony was attended by the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Assist.Prof.Dr. Akram Nouri Sadiq, and the Assistant Deans for Scientific Affairs and Student Affairs.
The festival, held under the theme ‘Geographic Information Systems: A Vital Foundation in Decision-Making,’ aimed to enhance awareness and understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their role in society. It achieved this through a variety of events hosted in educational, governmental, and specialized organizations. The focus was on highlighting GIS applications in urban planning, environmental protection, natural resource management, navigation, geographic studies, and more.
The festival featured lectures by Assist.Prof.Dr. Bushra Ali Ahmed, Head of the Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Department, on Geographic Information Systems and their Applications in Various Fields. Additionally, Prof.Dr. Fuad Kazim Mashi delivered a lecture titled ‘Using Geographic Information Systems in Crisis Management,’ and researchers Saif Al-Alaq and student Fatima Jalal presented a lecture on the ‘Latest Technological Updates for Esri Company. The lectures covered the latest technological advancements, sharing experiences and exchanging ideas in the dynamic field. This encourages youth to explore Geographic Information Systems as a career path, raising awareness about the importance of geographic information, understanding, conveying, and interacting among professionals and researchers in this vital field.
The festival featured speeches, poetry readings, artistic and cultural events, as well as the distribution of certificates among representatives of the dean’s office, festival organizing committees, top-performing students, faculty members, and outstanding affiliates. The opening of the festival included an artistic and scientific exhibition by the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Assist.Prof.Dr. Akram Nouri Sadiq, showcasing paintings, artistic displays, handicrafts, scientific devices, student innovations, and scientific publications. The event also included the organization of the Seismic Monitoring and Geographic Information Systems Laboratory, with a lecture on the lab’s essential tasks in issuing earthquake monitoring reports, the devices involved, and their distribution across Iraqi provinces
