The College of Engineering Khwarizmi at the University of Baghdad obtained a patent entitled (Wastewater Treatment for Oil Refineries in an Innovative Hybrid Way Consisting of Photocatalytic Oxidation combined with Electrical Fenton) from the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, by Prof. Dr. Ali Hussein Abbar from the Department of Biochemical Engineering with the master’s student researcher Marwa Mohsen Jiyad.

The patent included the design of an innovative system consisting of an innovative electrochemical reactor with a photoreactor that was used to treat various wastewater resulting from purification and refining units. The aim of this invention was to treat the water associated with oil extraction operations, which contain toxic organic compounds that threaten the aquatic and surface environment adjacent to wells and also aimed to get rid of many pharmaceutical compounds harmful to the environment and present in the water coming out of hospitals and health centers.

This invention can also be used to treat water generated from various industrial sectors in the Ministry of Industry and Minerals such as textile and dye factories, tanning factories, chemical laboratories producing organic chemicals, detergents, and others.
