The Ministry of Oil has recently dedicated the Best Scientific Research Award to the faculty member at the Department of Environmental Engineering at the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Zainab Ziad Ismail and the researcher Rusul Mwafaq Khazal for their applied research in the field of environment, safety and the oil industry sector during a celebration held under the slogan (Encouraging Excellence for Upgrading the Scientific Research Process).
It is noteworthy that this paper is part of the master’s thesis submitted by the engineer (Rusul Mwafaq) that dealt with the production of a clean and a renewable electrical energy through the treatment of oil sludge, which is released in very large quantities from oil facilities and refineries and that poses a critical risk to the surrounding environment if not treated in an environmentally safe manner. In this research, the oil sludge in the biofuel cell was treated based on the group of bioelectrochemical processes that occur within the cell with very high efficiency and with the removal of organic content and hydrocarbons that exceeded 99%.
