The Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences at the College of Education for Women, has organized a symposium on the (Contemporary challenges facing the empowerment of Iraqi women: education as a model) on the occasion of the International Day of Education and under the slogan (Together for the advancement of women’s education). A number of professors have participated in this event with several research papers in the presence of heads of scientific departments and a group of professors, employees and students. They aimed to reveal the challenges that hinder the empowerment of Iraqi women in the field of education (unemployment, poverty, displacement) as well as to identify the reality of enabling education in Iraq for Iraqi women according to the laws, policies and decisions.

The participants reached at a set of recommendations, the most important of which is to emphasize the obligatory education, follow up on dropouts, take the necessary measures that encourage girls’ enrollment in education and others, urge the empowerment of girls and develop their capabilities to keep pace with modern teaching methods, and the establishment of state institutions and various agencies in each field of specialization. They stated the need for formulating an educational development path, a social work program or a vocational training targeted towards reducing the gaps between women and men, reduce areas of women’s marginalization, also to open up new horizons to mobilize women’s capabilities on the ground, restoring literacy programs in particular or cultural and educational programs in general. It is noteworthy that illiteracy today does not mean ignorance of reading or writing only, but it includes ignorance in the use of modern means of communication and contemporary technologies.
