In the Department of Earth Science at the College of Science has witnessed the discussion of a master’s thesis entitled “Hydrological and hydrochemical properties of the Euphrates River and the calculation of dissolved load between the cities of Al-Hindiya and Nasiriyah” that was submitted by the researcher Marwa Muhammad Hussein under the supervision of Dr. Moataz Abdul Sattar al-Dabbas.

The study aimed to examine the hydrology of the river to detect the difference in discharge along the river temporally and spatially, in addition to studying its hydrochemical properties, water pollution, biological analyzes and dissolved load, and evaluating the validity of the use of its water for drinking by animals, construction, industries and irrigation. The results of the study proved that the discharge of river water decreases over the years, and this led to an increase in the salinity of the river water temporally and spatially and thus to the deterioration of the quality of the river’s water, and that the quality of the Euphrates River water in Al-Hindiya dam, represented by sodium sulfate, while in the Samawa and Nasiriyah sites, there is a contaminated water that may be suitable for construction, livestock and irrigation purposes, and the results showed that water pollution with organic and inorganic compounds.
