The University of Baghdad won recently the first position locally according to the January 2023 edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities after competition with (122) Iraqi universities and by getting the (1561) rank globally among (12000) international universities according to the indicators obtained during this month, so our university is listed within the 13% position and up 296 ranks compared to the last year where it was in the (1857) position globally.

This progress came as a result of the plan prepared by the presidency of the University of Baghdad followed up in detail and daily, and the most important steps to enhance the university’s ranking was the launch of the digital repository of the University of Baghdad, which provided all the research conducted by the faculty members and were published in different university’s journals to be open access and free of charge. The second step that was adopted by the University of Baghdad is to follow up the accounts of professors and postgraduate students in scientific research portals so as to spread the culture of the use of academic research tools.

It is noteworthy that the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab which is a research group belonging to (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain and it is issued every six months based on the most updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world, namely visibility (50%), transparency (or openness) (10%) and excellence (or scholar) (40%). The main objective of the evaluation of universities globally by Webometrics is to urge access to the information published by the university easily and that those in charge of it are a group of scientists working in international public research institutions with considerable experience in this field, and the classification of universities and colleges is considered as a research project and any change in methodology may correspond to new results or the availability of sources.
