Dr. Ismail Shanan Dasher, a lecturer from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the College of Engineering, has delivered a lecture on “Optical Semiconductors” within the scientific activities of the department in the presence of a number of faculty members who interacted with the lecturer through their questions. He stressed that optical semiconductors have widespread applications in optical communications, optical data storage, measurement, spectroscopy, material processing, pumping of other lasers, lighting devices and medical treatments, that optical semiconductors differ from electronic semiconductors by their structure, materials and energy gap, and that Silicon is the basic material in electronics while the Gallium arsenide is the typical material in optoelectronics.
