The Center for Women’s Studies at the University of Bagdad held a workshop within the 16-day campaign to combat violence against women, where the Assist. Lecturer Hiba Abdul Mohsen Abdul Karim, delivered a research paper entitled “Silence about violence is a participation in it” at the Department of Sociology of the College of Education for Women. This research dealt with the definition of the most prominent forms of violence and discrimination on the basis of gender and the need to educate students about the manifestations of violence and its dangers in society and encourage them to break the silence in the event that they are exposed to any form of violence. Then an encouraging event was held for the female students entitled: “Be Courageous, Strong, Educated, Empowered, Confident, and Ready for Any Emergency You Face in Your Life Path”.

The workshop was concluded with a number of recommendations, the most important of which is to raise the level of awareness among women in order to confront any violence they are exposed to, and this is done by promoting the concept of women’s self-awareness so that they do not fall into the trap of surrendering to violence, and this is by empowering, educating and training them through awareness lectures and effective programs and to help them know their strengths and improve the image of women in society by trying to change the traditional view of them and keenness to consolidate the values of citizenship, goodness, social justice, eliminating misconceptions that help discriminate against women, paying attention to activating international conventions, carrying out deterrent legal measures to punish the abuser of women and adopting programs and policies to address threats to human security.
