The College of Nursing at the University of Baghdad has recently organized a workshop entitled (Awareness about Breast Cancer) in the presence of a number of faculty members, administrative staff and students with the aim to educate women about this disease and how to conduct breast self-examination.

The workshop also included the following themes: the anatomy of the breast and the changes that occur to the breast in different periods of life, the benefits of breast self-examination and the importance of early detection of breast tumors, risk factors about it, educating and encouraging women on how to do a monthly breast self-examination. At the workshop, the researchers called for the need to combine public awareness with educating health workers about the signs and symptoms of early breast cancer so that women are referred to diagnostic services when necessary. A rapid diagnosis must be linked to an effective cancer treatment that in many places requires a certain level of specialized cancer care. Through the establishment of centralized services by a cancer facility or hospital, and by using breast cancer as a model, an optimal level of breast cancer treatment can be achieved while improving the management of other kinds.
