The professors of the Department of Astronomy and Space at the College of Science have succeeded in monitoring and observation of the partial solar eclipse occurring in Iraq and other countries around the world, in the presence of the assistant rector for scientific affairs, Prof. Dr. Marwan Abdul Hamid Ashour and the dean of the college, Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim al-Qazzaz, and a number of researchers and those interested in astronomical and space observation.

The astronomical phenomenon included introductory lectures related to the phenomenon of the natural partial solar eclipse and the times of its occurrence, causes and effects, which indicated that the eclipse in general occurs when the three celestial bodies (Earth, Moon and Sun) are lined up together, which leads to the appearance of a ring of light around the dark moon, also called by the astronomers as (the Ring of Fire), indicating that the reason for the appearance of it because the moon is very far from the earth, that is, at the Apogee point which is farthest from earth. It is noteworthy that the eclipse in Iraq took place at 1:30 pm o’clock till 3:30 pm in the afternoon, where at least 40 percent of the Sun has been blocked by the Moon.
