The University of Baghdad seeks to preserve the green spaces that represent 83 percent of its total green area by providing appropriate services for its sustainability. The dense gardens and trees at the University of Baghdad and their diversity are representing the main habitat of many species of rare birds in Iraq, so there are great efforts exerted for the cultivation of new varieties of plants, as well as maintaining the water canal and rehabilitation of small lakes. These artificial lakes are also a suitable environment for scientific and laboratory research for postgraduate studies at the colleges of science and agricultural engineering, as well as the presence of large microscopic organisms in the aqueduct that is described as the source of sustenance for birds.
