The ministry of higher education and scientific research has approved a book authored by the Assist. Prof. Dr. Murooj Mudher Abbas from the department of sociology at the college of education for women, entitled “Social Work and Changing Societies” as being a reference book. The author is interested in highlighting the role of social work as a humanitarian profession directed towards helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their abilities in proper social functioning.

This reference book consisted of six chapters in which Dr. Murooj Mudher shed light on the historical roots of social service, the stages of its development as well as the concept of social work when used in science, art or field practice as well as the reality of social work in any changing community full of challenges and difficulties along with global trends, contemporary problems closely related to the lives of individuals, in addition to the vivid and direct impact of globalization, privatization and information network on daily life at present.

Also the book included a chapter on modern trends in social work due to the urgent need for the role played by social work in the fields of productive organizations, social justice, workforce planning, human resources, as well as ecological & demographic fields. The author believes that in case of the paucity of previous literature in this topic, the effective practice of social work must be based on a global perspective to improve the quality of life and strengthen citizenship, social welfare, equality, justice and human rights to build, modernize and develop social capital, human investment and social support that forces integration into global thinking by depending on conscious strategies practiced effectively.
