Assist. Prof. Dr. Muna Haidar Abdul Jabbar, head of the department of sociology and Assist. Prof. Dr. Zainab Mohammed Saleh have participated recently in a training workshop sponsored by Al-Amal Iraqi Association entitled “International humanitarian law and peace studies” held in Erbil as part of the activities and projects of this association funded by the European Union. This event witnessed the presentation of a number of research papers focusing on various aspects of peace studies such as a cross-academic scope of competences, human rights, the most important international agreements in this regard, the principles of the humanitarian law, as well as the peace initiatives undertaken by the United Nations during war and the effects of cultural heritage on the peacemaking.

Also the workshop aimed to refine the skills of professors in the field of international law in particular and to understand basic concepts and intellectual frameworks in the field of peace and human rights in general, build the ability to think about the relevant legal frameworks in terms of knowledge, to summon the Iraqi reality, confirm the factors used for adapting with the general context and to deal with different conflicts. At the end of the training workshop, the participants received the UNESCO Chair for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
