The department of remote sensing and geographic information system, in coordination with the continuing education unit at the college of science has organized a virtual scientific lecture entitled “Semiconductors and their applications” delivered by the Assist. Prof. Dr. Zahraa Najim Abdul Amir, in the presence of a number of students, researchers and those concerned with the physical affairs from inside and outside the college. The aim of the lecture was to introduce the use of the term “semiconductor” as a group of crystalline solids, which have a medium capacity to deliver electricity sufficiently to conductive materials, as well as not insulating materials, also being characterized with energy efficiency and low prices.

The lecturer stated the semiconductors are widely used their in manufacturing electronic devices, including diodes and that thery are consisting mainly of silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, lead sulphide and endium phosphide. It is noteworthy that there are many other materials that can be used as semiconductors, including some types of plastics are made like semiconductors to be used in the manufacture of light-emitting diodes known as LEDs, because plastic is a flexible material that can be formed in different shapes
