Prof. Dr. Munir Hamid al-Saadi, rector of the University of Baghdad has attended a memorial ceremony for the former dean of the college of engineering and the former head of the department of civil engineering, Prof. Dr. Khalid Shaker Mahmoud, in the presence of the Scientific Advisor of the ministry of higher education and scientific research Prof. Dr. Musa Jawad al-Musawi and a number of deans of the faculties of engineering, science for women and heads of departments at the university’s presidency.

During his speech, the rector praised this memorial ceremony to recall the achievements of the most prominent scientific icon of the college of engineering Dr. Khalid Shaker who had great scientific contributions in designing a large number of vital facilities and bridges in Iraq, as well as supervising a large number of graduate students, some of whom have become professors today. The attendees recalled Dr. Khalid Shaker’s achievements, which spanned decades, especially in the previous century, when he designed several highway bridges and other amazing buildings in cooperation with the major German companies implementing the projects, in addition to auditing the designs of Mohammed Al Qasim Highway in Baghdad, until he became a member of the committee for the reconstruction of bridges that were affected by the U.S bombing in 1991, overseeing the reconstruction of the suspension bridge at that time, as well as designing Samawah Cement Factory, Um Qasr Cement Factory and two Silk Textile Factories in Hilla, Babylon.

It is noteworthy that Prof. Dr. Khalid Shaker Mahmoud was born in Baghdad in 1929, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1953 and then he obtained the MA degree in 1957 and PhD degree in 1958 in civil engineering from Purdue University in USA. He has supervised many MA & PhD students and held various positions, including the position of the dean of the college of engineering (1969-1975). The family of the deceased, represented by his eldest son, was honored with the university’s shield, who appreciated this memorial service to commemorate his father and promised to donate his own library to the department of civil engineering.
