The college of pharmacy has organized recently an online workshop entitled “Obesity Surgical Treatments” delivered by the consultant surgeon Ahmed Nasser al-Tarffi, a specialist in metabolic and obesity surgery, fellow of the Iraqi Board of General Surgery, member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and a fellow of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), in cooperation with the Drugs and Medicinal Plants Branch at the College via Zoom program.

Dr. Ahmed al-Tarffi identified the causes of obesity and its classifications and methods of treatment in terms of medicines and surgeries and the most common symptoms of the metabolic syndrome that can be explained as a cluster of conditions that occur together, causing an increasing risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include an increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat and abnormal cholesterol.
