The department of astronomy and space, in collaboration with Ibn Sina center for e-learning and the continuing education unit at the college of science has recently organized a virtual lecture on “Crescent vision between astronomy and Islamic law” delivered by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman Hussein Saleh with the participation of a number of professors, researchers and postgraduate students.

The lecturer aimed to identify the techniques adopted for the observations of crescent phases in the country, especially for the announcement of religious events and how to carry out such observations of moon phases, eclipses, tidal coupling and asteroids in relation to the Islamic law. Also the lecture included shedding light on the detailed description of the moon’s orbit, its change from time to time and how to determining the beginnings of the Hijri months and the reasons behind the difference in the duration of the month as well as the opinion of the Muslim jurists in this subject through history.
