The department of chemistry in collaboration with the continuing education unit at the college of science held a virtual workshop entitled “Prelude to ISO, occupational safety and health requirements in work environment” with the participation of a number of graduate students, professors and members of quality assurance and academic accreditation committees.

The lecturers aimed to provide a guideline for employers and to introduce the concept of occupational safety, its objectives and procedures for application in the Iraqi work environment, as well as to discuss the types of risks to which employees and students might be exposed to in laboratories and means of achieving employee safety in accordance with the standards of “Good Laboratory Practice” (GLP).

Also the participants discussed matters related to how these criteria are adopted in educational laboratories, clarifying the basis for selecting supervisors of scientific laboratories, the duties assigned to laboratory workers, taking into account the advantages of obtaining ISO certification. It is noteworthy that the International Organization for Standardization is an independent, non-governmental, international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services, and systems in many areas of industry, including energy management, social responsibility, medical devices and energy management that seek to ensure consistency where each certification has separate standards and is classified numerically.
