The college of media at the University of Baghdad has concluded the events of the 6th annual survey carried out by the doctoral students at the department of public relations for the best performance of media institutions 2020. The dean of the college, Prof. Dr. Ammar Taher stated in the opening speech that this survey tried to evaluate the professional performance of the Iraqi media institutions during the global spread of the Covid-19 pandemic that caused a major coup around the globe, resulting in various economic, social and cognitive effects on all aspects of life where the world held its breath amid daily statistics that turned people into figures in the evening news.

In the midst of these poor conditions, there are outstanding student initiatives that achieve the goals of higher education and reflect the well-known leadership of the University of Baghdad with its community. Dr. Ammar Taher congratulated the winners in this event as having been able to gain the satisfaction of selected audience through their great efforts and creative work in terms of form and content, stating that today’s ceremony represents an explicit message that we are armed with science and knowledge to build a prosperous future for our country in commitment to the principle that great nations rise in life through their scientific superiority while those adhering to ignorance remain always defeated.

For his part, head of the department of public relations Dr. Mohammed al-Ameri stated in his speech that the result reached by the doctoral students in this field study were very useful in determining the directions of public opinions towards many social and political conditions taking place in Iraq. Dr. Alaa Mustafa, the assistant professor of public opinion stated that the measurement of people’s points of view is considered as a key pillar in guiding decision makers in our contemporary world in all economic, social and political fields in the right direction, adding that pre-measurement of the expected reactions towards any decision which has a direct impact on the members of a given society has become an urgent necessity to avoid direct collision with the public, the consequences of such decision or even its application, thus the measurement of public opinion in developed countries represents very important arms for decision makers in various fields.

So researchers started collecting data, processing statistics, follow-up of demographic variables under the abnormal living conditions imposed by the Coronavirus to interpret the findings; the first place for the best presenter of TV programs gained by (Sahar Abbas Jamil) from Dijlah TV channel, while (Ali al-Khalidi) of Al-Sharqiya channel won the second place as best field program presenter. Hussam al-Taie of Al-Sharqiya channel won the best broadcaster award, while Assabah Newspaper was considered as the best Iraqi newspaper and Sumer FM was the best broadcast in Iraq. The award for best sports program went to “Kooora” which is broadcasted on Al-Forat channel, while al-Iraqiya channel was the best in health awareness to reduce the Corona pandemic and al-Sharqiya channel won the award for best public channel.
