The center for urban and regional planning for postgraduate studies held its second international scientific conference under the slogan “prospects for sustainability and urban planning” in the presence of the rector of the University of Baghdad Prof. Dr. Munir Hamid al-Saadi and the advisor to the speaker of the Iraqi parliament Dr. Nadeem Al-Jabri and the advisor to the ministry of higher education and scientific research Dr. Mohsen Al-Fariji, as well as a number of representatives of Iraqi, Arab and international universities, research centers and other related entities. Dr. Munir al-Saadi delivered a speech at the opening of the conference in which he explained that the sustainability of Iraqi cities requires the availability of several elements of engineering, technology and other components to be implemented in light of the health and financial crises that the world is going through at present and stressed the role played by decision-makers in the implementation of these elements in line with the local labor market.

The conference discussed the factors affecting the creation of housing units, as well as the priorities of planning and reconstruction of cities, especially Mosul and how to improve the current reality of this city and upgrading its infrastructure in addition to the development of tourism during the financial crises facing our country. Other research papers focused on slum crises and the need for taking advantage of international experiences in this regard to enhance them and how to provide a better community services for people in the meantime of population growth which occupies land horizontally in a way that conflicts with the architectural conditions and specifications. It is noteworthy that the conference witnessed in-attendance and virtual sessions in which participants discussed 50 out of 150 papers submitted by researchers from Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Spain, Britain and Russia who agreed upon submitting all recommendations to the concerned authorities for the sake of employing them in accordance with their urban plans for the coming year.
