The department of physics and Ibn Sina units of e-learning and continuing education at the college of science have organized lately a virtual lecture entitled “overview of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) situation in Iraq: challenges and solutions” delivered by Dr. Firas Mohammed Radhi from the directorate of the treatment of radioactive wastes at the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) with the participation of students and scholars from inside and outside the college.

The lecturer aimed to introduce the term “TENORM” that refers to the technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material resulting from human activity that has concentrated the radioactivity or increased the likelihood of exposure by making the radioactive material more accessible to human contact. Then Dr. Firas Mohammed talked about the best ways for the prevention of ionizing radiation which is of great importance in daily life due to its increasing sources and the damage it causes to human beings and environment and all matters related to oil and gas industry through an extensive study of the some deposits containing radium (226Ra) in oil facilities in the North Sea (Britain and Norway) in 1981 & U.S. oil production facilities in 1986.
