The department of geography & GIS at the college of arts organized an online electronic symposium on “Environmental Reality in Iraq after 2003” in the presence of a number of professors and researchers.

The participants discussed the environmental consequences after 2003 on the all levels of Iraqi life, including urban encroachment on agricultural land and water or radioactive pollution, as well as the problem of lack of water imports and waste that affected the levels of marshes and lakes.

The study showed a vivid lack of the services and the role played by the ministry of environment for fourteen years (2004 – 2018) as it was expected to affect the reduction of pollutants, in addition to a combination of political, social and security problems that prevented the achievement of the most essential objectives of this ministry. It is noteworthy that this ministry was merged with the ministry of health as it was before 2003, which exacerbated the environmental hazards, their economic, social and public health impacts on people.
