Air Pollution Session
Under the auspices of the Dean of College of Engineering Prof. Dr. Qasim Mohammed Dos, the Environmental Engineering Department held a session in Mahdi Hantoosh Hall in the College of Engineering entitled Air Pollution for the employees of the Environmental Ministry and Its Institutes from whole Iraqi Provinces, for a period of two days (28-29/2/2010). Two lectures were held on the first day, the first one entitled Introduction to air pollution, and the lecture consists of the following subjects: Type and component of air pollution problems, Source and effect of air pollution, Photochemical smog, Regulatory items on ambient air and emissions standards, Criteria and non- criteria pollutants, and Air quality standards. While the second lecture entitled Meteorological aspects of air pollutant dispersion and the following aspects were clarified: Average temperature profile through the atmosphere, planetary boundary layer (PBL) and geotropic layer, Atmospheric stability (typical atmospheric temperature lapse rates), Plume behavior emitted from an elevated source, Topographic effects (terrain effects), Aerodynamic effects of structure, and Wind rose. In the second day two other lectures were held the first one entitled Dispersion of air pollutants and the lecture discussed the following subjects: Gaussian dispersion model, Point source emission at ground level, Point source emission at elevation, Maximum ground level concentration from an elevation source, Line source dispersion model, Plum rise, and Air pollution software. Videos shows air pollution problems were displayed during the second lecture and the participants visited the air pollution monitoring station in the College of Engineering. The lectures were presented by the Head of the Environmental Engineering Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Yasmen Abdul-Aziz Mustafa.
