A number of professors from the institute for urban and regional planning for postgraduate studies at University of Baghdad participated in the workshop held by the department of environment and water at the ministry of science and technology entitled (wetlands in Iraq and the criteria of the Ramsar convention in the selection of international sites). The workshop included a presentation of documentary films and specialized research as well as increasing our capacity, knowledge and skills and conducting scientific research in the field of wetland management and how to face the challenges exposed through a national and regional action also an international cooperation. The participants emphasized on the importance of marshes and how to preserve them as a world heritage and a historical legacy through scientific studies and unlimited logistic support for the rehabilitation of the marshes, especially after the launch of the initiative of the center for open cooperation with all relevant authorities. It is noteworthy that this workshop was largely praised by the attendants from the ministries of water resources, science and technology, health and environment, tourism and antiquities, oil, industry and minerals, as well as provincial councils and civil society organizations.
