Student Research from College of Engineering Examines Hybrid Solutions to Improve Energy Efficiency

A research team from the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad participated in the Iraq International Oil, Gas, Energy and Petrochemicals Exhibition (IRAQ EXPO OGEP 2026), held at the Basra International Exhibition grounds in Al-Maqal Port in Basra Governorate, by presenting a scientific paper titled “A Hybrid Energy Optimization System for Sustainable Energy Supply in Baghdad Utilizing the Akkas Gas Field.”

The research was completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohammed Salih Al-Jawad, by a research team of students from the Department of Petroleum Engineering, comprising researcher Bare’a Muath Mohsen, Hussein Mohammed Shawkat, and Zaid Qasim Abdullah.

The research focuses on developing a hybrid system to improve the efficiency of energy production in Baghdad by making use of the gas potential available in the Akkas gas field, thereby contributing to reducing the cost of energy production, reducing polluting emissions, and improving the efficiency and sustainability of energy supplies.

The study also addressed the possibility of employing national gas resources within a hybrid model, thereby providing technical solutions that can help address the challenges of energy supply and enhance the efficiency of the energy system in Iraq.

This activity contributes to achieving a number of the Sustainable Development Goals, namely Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), in addition to Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
