The College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Baghdad organized a workshop titled “The Impact of Media in Spreading Ideological Deviation and Extremism Among Youth,” presented by Assistant Lecturer Mukhlid Maher Dawood.
The workshop aimed to highlight the dual role of media in shaping youth awareness, illustrating how media platforms can either serve as tools for promoting moderate thought and reinforcing balanced values, or conversely, become instruments for fueling extremism and ideological deviation in the absence of critical thinking and proper media education.
The session explored the stages through which ideological deviation occurs and examined the influence of digital media on the intellectual and behavioral orientations of young people. It included analysis of real-world examples of media content that either contributes to the spread of extremist thought or helps counter it, emphasizing the educational role of academic and media institutions in guiding youth toward enlightened and moderate thinking.
In conclusion, the workshop recommended the need to instill critical thinking skills in youth when engaging with media, to confront extremist discourse through responsible and informed media practices, and to integrate media literacy concepts into university activities to foster a culture of media awareness.
This workshop contributes to the achievement of Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which calls for peace, justice, and strong institutions.
