The University of Baghdad organized a scientific symposium titled “The Role of the University in Protecting Society: Addressing Phenomena and Enhancing Social Stability,” under the supervision of the Center for Educational and Psychological Research and in collaboration with the National Permanent Committee for Community Awareness and Guidance at the Prime Minister’s Office. The event was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Mousa Jaafar Radi, Director of the Development Division at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Coordinator of the Committee’s Activities, alongside Dr. Fadhel Shakir Al-Saadi, Director of the Center for Educational and Psychological Research. The symposium also featured an art exhibition by the University of Baghdad showcasing its rejection of harmful societal phenomena alien to Iraqi culture.
During the event, the center’s director highlighted the importance of the university’s role in awareness and guidance to address societal challenges and promote a stable and secure environment. Professor Dr. Mousa Jaafar Al-Mousawi commended the University of Baghdad’s initiative in hosting such symposia, emphasizing the commitment of academic institutions to their national and societal roles. He reiterated the ministry’s support for intellectual and educational awareness projects.
The symposium included several specialized lectures, addressing topics such as the university’s role in confronting internal societal values, fostering positive values within the academic environment, and their impact on social stability. Additional discussions focused on the phenomenon of extremism, its types, and measures to combat it, as well as awareness programs on the dangers of drugs and the university’s essential role in safeguarding students and youth from its traps.
The event concluded with several key recommendations, notably the need to involve families in educational approaches for their children by promoting family awareness and providing psychological and social support. It also emphasized the enforcement of laws and regulations related to combating domestic violence, ensuring their effective implementation. Furthermore, it called for expanded drug awareness programs within academic environments and broader cultural and educational activities directed at students.
This activity aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 17, which promotes partnerships for achieving shared objectives.
