The Unit for Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences for Women, University of Baghdad, hosted a delegation from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, including Mr. Ahmed Abdul Ameer and Esra’a Jawad Kazem, to conduct an awareness workshop for undergraduate female students titled “Real Challenges in Combating Environmental Disasters.”
During the workshop, Mr. Ahmed Abdul Amir introduced the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, explaining its role as a public benefit organization and humanitarian entity that adheres to all provisions of international humanitarian law, in accordance with the agreements ratified by the Republic of Iraq. He emphasized the Society’s commitment to the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
He also provided an in-depth explanation of the concept of a disaster, describing it as a sudden and catastrophic event that causes severe disruption to the functions of a community, resulting in widespread human, material, economic, and environmental losses. Such events create impacts that exceed the affected community’s ability to cope using its own resources. He further explained that disaster management occurs in sequential phases, including preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
At the end of the workshop, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Students, Prof.r. Suhad Haseeb, presented the delegation from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society with certificates of appreciation, thanking them for their efforts in conducting such an important awareness workshop on combating environmental disasters and preparing for future challenges. She expressed her best wishes for their continued success in serving the country.
This workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 13, which focuses on climate action and emphasizes proactive measures to reduce disaster risks and address climate change.
