The Department of Earth Sciences, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop titled “Water Situation in Iraq.” The event was held under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Assist.Prof.Dr. Raed Faleh Hassan, and attended by a number of graduate students, faculty members, and those concerned with water resources.

The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the status of both groundwater and surface water in Iraq in light of the country’s water policy, water budgets, flood resources, and the phase of managing flood crises and dam maintenance. The distribution of water is considered the most critical element in the work of water institutions, and improving the efficiency of its allocation and performance contributes to rationalizing water use and exploiting it optimally.

The workshop, which featured lectures by Dr. Iman Ahmed and Dr. Hend Fadhil, included discussions on how to benefit from other water sources such as rainwater, floods, and groundwater. It also focused on strategies to rationalize water consumption for irrigation, industry, drinking, and other purposes, as well as exploring alternatives to mitigate the water crisis. The workshop also covered the challenges of water shortages entering Iraq and potential solutions, emphasizing the importance of peaceful planning and management to address this crisis, alongside maintaining awareness and education through practical studies and research.

This workshop contributes to achieving one of the sustainable development goals, specifically Goal 6, which advocates for clean water and sanitation.
