The High Commission for Human Rights concluded the first phase of its first development course for preparing and empowering professors at the University of Baghdad, who teach human rights in their colleges, where the course was held in cooperation between the Publishing and Education Department in the Commission, the Human Rights Division at the Presidency of the University of Baghdad, and the Center for Continuing Education.

This course aims to develop the capabilities of professors and enhance their skills in spreading the culture of human rights within academic institutions, in addition to training them to be qualified trainers to transfer this knowledge to others through workshops that they will hold later within their formations.

The course focused on presenting basic concepts about human rights, in addition to reviewing relevant international and regional conventions and declarations, and the importance of human rights education and its role in promoting community awareness was emphasized.

The course witnessed an interaction with lectures presented by experts specialized in the field of human rights and included extensive discussions on the challenges facing the teaching of this subject in Iraqi universities and ways to develop curricula in line with international standards.

At the end of the course, OHCHR presented certificates of appreciation to the participants in appreciation of their commitment and efforts in promoting a culture of human rights within academic institutions. The organizers of the course confirmed the continuation of cooperation between the Office and the University of Baghdad to organize future training programs aimed at building the capacity of educational staff and spreading the values of human rights in society.

This session achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth goal, which calls for quality education, including education for sustainable development, and human rights, as well as the eighth goal, which provides for decent work and economic growth, as this goal includes the protection of human rights and the promotion of a safe and secure work environment for all, and also falls within the seventeenth goal of partnership in order to achieve the goals in terms of scientific curricula for colleges, departments and materials responsive to sustainable development.
