The Department of Reconstruction and Projects at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with the support and hosting of the College of Science at the University of Baghdad and under the patronage of the National Security Advisory, organized a preparatory workshop for the Fifth International Conference on Geospatial Technologies and Smart Cities.
The event , titled “The Evolution of Spatial Information Systems and Smart Cities in Academic and Research Endeavors,” was attended by a distinguished audience, including Prof.Dr. Uday Hatem Shaban, Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the College of Science, the Dean of the Center for Urban and Regional Planning, representatives from the National Security Advisory, as well as a large gathering of academics and officials.
The workshop aimed to highlight the significance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in supporting decision-making and enhancing the role of geospatial technology in improving operational efficiency. It focused on leveraging smart software solutions for building construction in alignment with global standards, ultimately contributing to societal and urban development.
Key recommendations from the workshop included phased support for smart city projects, the implementation of flexible initiatives such as smart lighting systems and intelligent traffic management to assess their impact and improve urban infrastructure. Additionally, the workshop emphasized the importance of optimizing resource management through innovative and sustainable technological solutions while integrating smart applications in urban construction. It also called for the outcomes of the upcoming international conference to directly contribute to the advancement of smart cities and geographic information systems.
This initaitive aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goals 9, 11, and 15, which focus on industry, innovation, infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, and life on land.
