The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Political Science, University of Baghdad, organized a training workshop titled “Extremism: Causes and Strategies for Counteraction” in observance of International Day Against Extremism.
Assist.Lecturer Maha Ali Hameed, during her management of the session, pointed out that ideological extremism has become a global phenomenon affecting both Arab and Western societies, with many youth, both educated and uneducated, falling victim to it. She clarified that ideological extremism has become one of the dangerous and rapidly spreading diseases among university students, explaining that the root causes of this phenomenon include knowledge openness, technological advancements, globalization, intellectual conflict, and the misinterpretation or weakening of the true essence of religion and religious principles.
In conclusion, the organizers of the workshop recommended addressing extremism through multiple approaches, including education, student activities, graduate studies, research, and community and environmental services.
This workshop aligns with one of the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 16, which calls for peace, justice, and strong institutions.
