The Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Media and Government Communication Division at the College of Science for Women, University of Baghdad, and in coordination with a team from the National Security Agency, organized a workshop titled “Extremism: Causes and Consequences.” The event was attended by several faculty members, staff, and students of the college.

The workshop explored the concept of extremism, defining it as the adoption of rigid or radical views that go beyond socially, religiously, or intellectually accepted boundaries. Extremism often manifests as an intense and exaggerated adherence to specific ideas, religious beliefs, or political ideologies. It can lead to behaviors characterized by violence or absolute rejection of opposing viewpoints. Furthermore, extremism can emerge in various domains, including religion, politics, sports, or any other social issue, and is typically accompanied by intolerance and disregard for alternative perspectives.

The team elaborated on the causes of extremism, highlighting its complexity and the interplay of individual, social, political, and religious factors. Among the primary drivers of extremism is social and economic marginalization, which may push individuals toward radical ideologies in search of status or belonging. Upbringing and cultural environment also play a crucial role, as individuals raised in environments saturated with extremist ideologies whether within families or communities are more likely to adopt radical views.

Additionally, political instability, including crises and wars affecting nations, significantly contributes to the spread of extremism. Another key factor is emotional and psychological void, as some individuals turn to extremism to find purpose or meaning in life, particularly if they suffer from social isolation or unresolved psychological struggles.

This workshop aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which emphasize the importance of fostering stable and resilient societies.
