The Veterinary Public Health Branch, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Baghdad, organized a scientific course on (the use of environmentally friendly materials in storing foodstuffs) in which Prof. Dr. Zeina Saeb Khudair lectured in the presence of a number of students at the college.

The course aimed to introduce the participants to the importance of using environmentally friendly materials in food storage, which contributes to reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment, as it is known that food packaging for a long time is to preserve food, protect it, and ease its circulation safely and comfortably. Recently, consumers have become increasingly aware of the health aspects associated with food consumption and the interrelationship between food and packaging and the environment in which these foodstuffs are stored to reach areas, and applications of (green) packaging are more efficient in providing healthy food.

During the course, sustainable options in food preservation such as biodegradable packaging was highlighted Reusable materials such as glass containers, silicone bags, safe metals, bamboo, and wood, and the benefits that can be obtained from the use of these materials were also addressed, namely reducing plastic pollution, preserving human health by avoiding harmful chemicals, supporting a sustainable economy through the use of natural and renewable materials.

 At the end of the course, the lecturer recommended the need to educate citizens to benefit from healthy materials, environmentally friendly used in food packaging such as paper bags and cardboard. The cost of these materials and the presence of factories for them with the presence of recycling plants to ensure the continuity of these materials in the markets and the lack of standards to ensure that the owners of markets and restaurants are obliged to use such materials.

This session achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by Title XV, which calls for life on earth.
