The Rehabilitation and Employment Unit at the College of Science at the University of Baghdad organized a workshop entitled “Public Safety in Laboratories” with the participation of students of the Department of Life Sciences to enhance their professional and educational culture.
The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of adhering to safety procedures inside laboratories, especially as laboratories deal with materials that may be hazardous or cause health and environmental risks. It provided comprehensive lectures on the correct practices that researchers, technicians, and students must follow while working in laboratories.
The workshop included several main aspects of safety, with a presentation of the most important risks that laboratory workers may face, such as chemical and biological accidents, the use of sharp equipment and tools, as well as the dangers of fire and exposure to toxic substances, as well as highlighting how to prevent these risks by applying approved safety standards, such as the use of personal protective equipment (such as helmets, gloves, and goggles), in addition to adhering to safe storage procedures for chemicals and safe waste disposal measures, stressing that Applying safety practices periodically, which contributes to improving the work environment and reducing the occurrence of occupational accidents, while emphasizing that safety in laboratories is not just guidelines, but rather a culture that everyone must adopt to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
This workshop achieves one of the sustainable development goals represented by the fourth and fifteenth goals, which call for quality education as well as life on earth.
