The Department of Life Sciences in collaboration with the Continuous Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad organized a lecture titled “Plant Tissue Culture: Laboratory Requirements and Purpose of Cultivation”. The event was held under the patronage of Assist.Prof.Dr. Raed Falah Hassan, Dean of the College, and attended by graduate students, faculty members, and experts in agricultural engineering.

The lecture aimed to provide insights into the field of plant tissue culture, focusing on the setup of a specialized laboratory. Topics discussed included the essential tools, equipment, and the organization of different sections within the lab, such as plant cleaning, sterilization of tools, and cultivation, depending on the purpose of the culture whether for propagation, hybridization, or genetic engineering.

Speakers highlighted the role of plant tissue culture in large-scale plant propagation, its use in biotechnology for gene transfer and genetic recombination, and the various methods employed, such as explant examination, medium preparation, and plantlet transplantation.

The lecture also underscored the importance of plant tissue culture in sustainable agriculture, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 2, which seeks to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable farming practices.
