The Department of Biotechnology, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Science, University of Baghdad, organized a lecture titled “Laboratory Safety and Security.” The event was attended by students, faculty members, and professionals responsible for managing the college’s laboratories.

The lecture aimed to highlight biosafety guidelines for laboratories, which consist of a set of essential policies, rules, and procedures that must be followed by personnel working in facilities handling microbiological agents such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, prions, and other microbial products.

The session also emphasized the importance of proper management and organization in implementing biosafety programs and practices at all levels, particularly in relation to preventive measures followed by laboratories. The speakers underscored that biosecurity is a comprehensive concept encompassing policies and regulations designed to protect humans, food, agriculture, and the environment from potential biological threats. They also stressed the importance of safeguarding innovations, standards, and practices used to secure pathogens, toxins, and microbiological advancements from unauthorized access due to misuse, theft, or deliberate release.
