The College of Education for Human Sciences at Ibn Rushd, University of Baghdad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, organized an awareness symposium titled “Registration of Small Arms for Citizens and the Purchase of Medium Arms.” The event was presented by Colonel Amer Kazem Ibraheem, Director of the Weapons Control and Organization Division for Baghdad/Al-Karkh Police, and Major Salam Sadiq Maktouf, Director of the Weapons Control and Organization Division for Baghdad/Al-Rusafa Police.
The symposium aimed to educate citizens about the process of registering small arms, how to apply for weapon permits, and discuss the dangers of unlicensed arms and their impact on societal peace. It covered the process of registering weapons through the official “Our Portal” electronic system, which ensures legal approvals and permits through the Ministry of Interior to guarantee community security and the issuance of weapons possession identification cards. It was emphasized that each household is allowed to register only one weapon under the law. Possessing more than one weapon would subject the individual to legal penalties, including imprisonment from one to three years under the Penal Code.
In conclusion, the activity emphasized the importance of cooperation between academic institutions and government bodies to enhance public awareness and ensure security and stability. It also recommended tightening laws and regulations related to carrying weapons to prevent unregulated weapons in society and called for the creation of awareness programs regarding the dangers of weapon proliferation in the community.
