The University of Baghdad holds a workshop in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning on the mechanisms and concepts of population studies. The workshop aimed to demonstrate the challenges facing the population in Arab countries in general, especially those witnessing conflicts or emerging from them, especially Iraq.
The Director of the National Center for Population and Demographic Studies, Nasr Shamil Salman, explained during his participation the importance of population studies, which is to know the number of the country’s population, as well as the number of manpower and productivity in society, in addition to working on developing future and strategic plans to secure job opportunities for the population, pointing to the importance of providing services such as housing, education, health, and other necessary services.
He also pointed out the importance of the population census as it is the only statistical process that takes place in a comprehensive inventory, which is an integrated photograph of society, as it provides statistical data in a comprehensive and detailed manner on all population, demographic, economic and social characteristics, rates and indicators of population growth and their scientific, cultural and intellectual composition.
The Head of the Analytical Techniques Department at the Center, Dr. Bashir Faisal Mohammed Al-Saadi, gave a presentation on the role of the Arab Population Day in promoting awareness of population issues, “that population growth rates vary greatly between Arab countries, which creates a disparity in the challenges and opportunities available to each country, indicating that countries with high population growth rates often face pressure on public resources and services such as education, health, and housing.
The workshop was attended by a number of representatives of ministries and entities not related to the ministry, and a number of heads of departments and divisions in the ministry.
