The College of Administration and Economics, Department of Economics, in collaboration with the Continuous Education Unit, organized a workshop titled “Desertification Phenomena and Their Impacts on the Environment and Agriculture”, delivered by Assist.Prof.Omar Hameed Majeed and Lecturer Nadia Shakir Hussein.
The workshop aims to shed light on the damages of desertification and its effects on the environment and agriculture. Desertification is recognized as a problem with multiple environmental dimensions, which consequently reflects on the economy in general, and agricultural economy in particular.
The lecturers pointed out that identifying the underlying causes of desertification is controversial due to the diversity of perspectives and backgrounds of researchers who study this phenomenon. Additionally, they mentioned that although the concept of desertification is relatively modern in the field of scientific discourse, it is not a new phenomenon and dates back to ancient times. The activity also addressed the historical roots of desertification, scientific definitions, causative factors, and major manifestations resulting from it.
The event concluded with several recommendations to mitigate and control desertification. Among the most important recommendations is the need to focus on providing human resources, infrastructure, and necessary financial resources to ensure the success of prevention and combat efforts against desertification. The workshop was attended by faculty members and staff of the college, who had the opportunity to discuss their inquiries and have them addressed.
