A new step towards enhancing sustainability, the University of Baghdad has occupied the 1st place in the Impact Rankings 2023 of sustainable cities and communities among (20) Iraqi University . It was also ranked in the 3rd top position among (79) Arab Universities that were listed in the same ranking after Aswan of Universities in Egypt, Qatar of University in Qatar.

The University of Baghdad achieved this ranking as a due to its efforts to promote sustainability; it has a number of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, such as a green campus, a recycling program, and a solar power plant. The university also places great emphasis on teaching and research in the field of sustainability.

It is noteworthy, that the Impact Rankings is a global ranking of universities and its measures their performance in a group of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), the University of Baghdad obtained high scores in the number of sustainable development goals, including SDG11 (sustainable cities and communities), and SDG9 (industrial innovation and infrastructure), SDG3 (good health and well-being), and SDG17 (partnership for the Goals).
