The Center for Urban and Regional Planning for Graduate Studies, represented by its dean and assistant rector for administrative affairs of the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Karim Hassan Alwan, accompanied by the master’s student at the center, Qasim Muhammad, have participated in the First Abbasid Shrine Conference on Local Experiences and Success Stories in implementing the 2030 agenda under the slogan (Luxury of the future is protected by the present), which was established by the Abbasid Holy Shrine in Karbala. The conference aimed to introduce the faculty members to sustainable development after presenting the projects implemented on the ground so as to achieve sustainable development, in addition to supporting successful and emerging projects.

Dr. Karim Alwan and Qasim Mohammed have presented their joint research entitled (Measuring the extent of application of the standards for establishment of the regular transformation stations for the municipalities of Karrada and Shula, which discussed the research process of transporting waste from urban areas to sanitary landfill sites that need large sums of money for their distance. They asserted that in order to address this problem, temporary transfer stations were established by the Municipality of Baghdad to reduce the cost of transportation, and for the purpose of preserving the environment in a sustainable manner, so Karrada and Al-Shula municipalities were used as a case study to measure the extent of adoption and application of standards for the construction of transforming stations.

The assistant rector for administrative affairs at the University of Baghdad, Dr. Karim Alwan concluded that the regular transformation stations do not conform to the standards of establishing stations by a large percentage, as well as the toxic waste sap is not being treated safely, and that the number of mechanisms (container crane) is not commensurate with the amount of waste arriving to the regular transformation stations there which leads to waste remaining for several days inside the station, which causes the extinction of ancient machines over time and leading to the pollution of environment. The research recommended the need to apply and adopt standards for transfer stations to maintain a safe and sustainable environment through Al-Rustamia project for sewerage network.
