The Coordination of Women’s Empowerment and the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science has organized a seminar on ways to combat violence against women in the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, in the presence of a number of students, professors and those concerned with the subject. This event aimed to introduce the importance of women in society and the most common characteristics that qualify them to occupy high positions since family building is the basis for the establishment of civilizations and nations so we find women play an important role in the progress and success of nations. The lecturers then reviewed bases that shape the suffering of women throughout human history and contemporary reality, referring to injustice, aggression, violation of their humanity and dignity, in addition to disregard for their rights, as well as highlighting some related legislation.

The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Alaa Abdul Zahra, entitled “Violence against Women Leading to Suicide”, while the second lecture was on the “Psychological Stress and its Effects on Women and Methods of Treatment” delivered by Dr. Zainab Abdul Zahra who talked about the psychological and social repercussions caused by violence against women in the long term and how to overcome it in general, indicating that exposure to violence in all its physical and moral forms has psychological and social repercussions on the individual and his surroundings, affecting family and work. She also talked about the effects of violence against women on health and behavior, adding that such cases may be accompanied by diseases including permanent anxiety, depression and isolation from the world in conjunction with the impact on professional life. She concluded her speech with an emphasis on the role of women who share men in life and who made a lot of sacrifices, so there is a need to get rid of the traditional image of women.
