The Department of Sociology at the College of Education for Women, held its second scientific course in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, entitled (Methods of treatment and the rehabilitation of drug addicts) with the participation of a number of students. The importance of this course comes from the seriousness involved in the phenomenon of drug abuse which poses a real threat to our Iraqi community due to its targeting of the most important element in it, namely the youth, who represent the main pillar that our society is based upon.
The course aims to identify the nature of drugs, the development of their origin, the types of drugs, the reasons for their use, the stages of falling into addiction, knowing the effects left by drug abuse, and standing on the role of the psychological counselor in preventing drug abuse. The participants reached a set of recommendations, the most important of which is to give the issue of prevention of drug abuse the utmost importance in schools and universities, continuous awareness of the harm of this dangerous scourge to the health of the individual and society, and urge psychological and educational counselors in schools and universities to prepare a varied, gradual and continuous counseling programs in preventing school and university students from falling prisoner of these dangerous substances and the use of the media available in prevention programs because of the role and great impact of these means in the prevention of this scourge in accordance with the plan and development of religious conscience and urging students to adhere fully to the teachings of the true Islamic religion in terms of following its orders and avoiding its prohibitions.
