The Continuing Education Unit held an in-person workshop entitled (Chemical Methods for Diagnosing Various Organic Compounds), which was delivered by the Prof. Taghreed Nizamuddin Omar and Prof. May Muhammad Jawad al-Muthafar with a practical application by the engineer Azhar Mahdi Jassim from the Ppharmaceutical Chemistry Branch.
The lecture included the identification and characterization of unknown substance structures that are very important factor in the organic chemistry to possibly determine the structure of a compound on the basis of spectra alone (infrared (IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) .. etc.), where the spectra should usually be supplemented by other information about the compound such as its physical state and properties (melting point, boiling point, melting, odor, color, etc.), analysis of elements, and confirmatory tests of functional groups.
