Assist. Prof. Dr. Muna Ismail Khalaf, a lecturer from the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, has received the first golden medal in the Fifth Patents and Industrial Designs Exhibition, which was held and sponsored by the Industrial Research and Development Authority at the Ministry of Industry and Minerals for her patent entitled “Preparation of organic molecules with a mutual π system of low molecular weight p-type” in partnership with Dr. Ahmed Khudair Kazim, who is working at the Ministry of Environment.

This study aimed at preparing semiconductor materials from organic compounds with a mutual π system and studying their electro-optical and conductivity properties, as low-molecular weight compounds with a mutual π system of symmetrical pyromaltic acid derivatives were prepared through Schiff base interaction and were diagnosed by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and studied their electro-optical and electro-physical properties by measuring the Hall Effect on the compounds. The results of the patent indicated that the prepared compounds are p-type semiconductors (electron acceptor) (positive) and these compounds are of applied importance in solar cells or for electronic devices (optical) such as Field-Effect Transistors (FETs), Photovoltaic (PV) Cells (computers) or Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
